The education on subjects related to conservation science started fairly recently at Eötvös Loránd University. By 2004, archaeological geology comprises a separate module in the education scheme. The main focus of interest is archaeometry and particularly the study of provenance and technology of non-metallic raw materials, environmental archaeology and application of soil science research in archaeology as well as mineralogical study of archaeological materials including metallic finds, e.g. slag. Currently there are 3 PhD doctoral theses being in preparation in this field as well as a number of ongoing MS theses in preparation on various archaeological find materials.
This Department established active connection to institutes with complex analytical facilities (Laboratories of different institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, other universities and the Hungarian Geological Institute). There is a strict collaboration with the Hungarian National Museum (HNM) as well as some important regional museums like Veszprém, Laczkó Dezsõ Museum or Miskolc, Herman Ottó Museum. The department is also involved in research performed at the Archaeological Institute of the HAS.
